Bill Haley
and the Comets originally called themselves the Saddleman while playing
the nightclubs of Wildwood as a country western swing band. As the story
goes one summer night in 1950 Bill Haley stopped into the Riptide where
the great R&B band called the Treniers were performing. It was the
Treniers rockin' stage show that made Haley decide to kick off his cowboy
boots and start playing rock and roll. Over the next four years they
had a string of hits including "Rock around the clock" which
they played for the first time at the HofBrau Hotel in the summer of
1954. |
